Weekly Updates: August 28, 2024
1. Partnering for Eternity Scholarship Program - This is an opportunity for students to engage in community service while earning FREE monies to supplement their TUITION. Kindergarten through 8th grade students can earn up to $1320 a year. Students in grades 9-12 can earn $1600 a year. 2. PWA After-School Program - the PWA after-school program will start on Tuesday, September 3rd taking place daily Monday through Thursday from 3:30pm - 6:00pm. Activities will include tutoring, drama, recreation and STEAM classes (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math). This program is not just for PWA students. Community youth are welcome to take part in these activities.
3. PWA Alumni Weekend - The annual PWA Alumni weekend themed "Forging in Fire" will be held September 27-29, 2024. You may have already received this information from flyers at your church or email distribution from Betty Yancey, but here are important details to remember:
a) Friday - The festivities begin at 7:30am with meet and greet, and breakfast for the PWA inaugural golf outing at the Inkster Valley Golf Course. The address is 2150 Middlebelt Road, Inkster, MI 48141. The cost is $60/per person + green fees. Interested participants should RSVP to John Turner at jturner@selaxbrokerage.com.
b) Sabbath - Sabbath School begins at 9:30am and will include a creative and inspiring look back, as the history of PWA is chronicled in the mission story to be presented by Sharon Smith, class of 1968. For the 11 o'clock worship service keynote speaker Dr. William E. Joseph, Jr., will present the morning message. Currently senior pastor of the Dupont Park SDA church in Washington, D.C., Dr. Joseph began his ministry in the Lake Region Conference. Special recognition will be given to three honorees - Roberta Perry and Darlene Brown, as well as alumnus of the year, Toson Antwan Knight from the class of 2005.
c) Sabbath Lunch - If you would like to reserve your spot for Sabbath lunch scheduled for 2:00pm, you must RSVP and pay $20 by September 4th. But don't delay! Space is limited and is filling up quickly.
d) Afternoon Concert - There will be a scholarship benefit concert featuring musical guest Dynamic Praise from Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama and others. Please take note, previously advertised to begin at 5pm, the concert time has been rescheduled to 6pm. The concert is reserved seating only. To secure your spot, concert tickets are just $20 until August 30th, then $25 until sold out. Please note: NO TICKETS WILL BE SOLD AT THE DOOR, so reserve yours today.
e) Evening Social - The Social at 8:00pm to be held at the school gym, will include fun activities like an old school vs new school basketball game, battle of the classes volleyball game, food and fellowship!
f) Sunday Morning - The weekend concludes at 8:00am at Willow Metro Park with the Arthur V. Strawbridge 5K walk/run. There is a parking fee of $10 and $30 registration fee. The first 40 registrants will receive an event T-shirt, water bottle and event medallion to commemorate this historical event. Proceeds will benefit the PWA Gym Program.
4. PWA 60th Anniversary - did you know that the current facility has been a beacon of light in the Inkster community since 1964? In order to continue the legacy with a high-quality facility, we invite you to be a part of this milestone year by contributing $60 per person toward the refurbishing of the north end of the building.

1. PWA 2024-25 - The new school year began on Wednesday August 14th with 19 students. Principal Jefferson has received many calls of interest. Please pray that these will result in the registration of more students to join the PWA student body! If you or someone you know have elementary and high-school age children, they can still register. Weekly Updates: August 7, 2024
1. PWA 2024-25 school year registration - Classes begin Wednesday August 14th at 8:15am. Please register now! The registration fee of $125 will be reduced to $75 until August 14th. Students can be registered at the school Monday - Friday from 9:00am - 2:00pm or by appointment. To make arrangements for a different time, please call the school and leave a message for Principal Jefferson. Please spread the word to take advantage of this great offer!
2. PWA Office Volunteer - Thank you to those who responded to the invitation to volunteer! PWA is still looking for individuals to volunteer in the office to answer phones, open the door and other delegated duties. We are now in need of volunteers for the afternoon from 12noon - 3:30pm. 3. PWA Work Bee - on Sunday, August 11 from 12-4pm, there will be a work-bee to prepare the facility for the new school year. We would like to encourage everyone to get the word out! Many hands make light work. Thank you in advance for helping us get PWA ready to receive students on August 14th.

1. SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAM - The PWA summer school program, which began the 2nd week of June, will continue through August 9th. Activities include cooking classes with Angie Moore (Ypsilanti SDA church), art instruction in painting by Doug Williams (City Temple SDA church), drama class led by Tim and Sherry Gardner (Burns SDA church), tutoring with Darlene Brown (City Temple SDA church), STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art Math) with Pam Bertram (City Temple SDA church) and recreation. It's not too late for your child to participate. Just call the school at 313-565-5808.
2. PWA CLASSES BEGIN - The 2024-25 school year begins Wednesday August 14th at 8:15am. Please take note! the registration fee of $125 will be waived for students who register through today, July 31st. From August 1st to August 14th, the registration fee will be reduced to $75. After school begins, the full registration fee of $125 will be expected. Students can register today from 9:00am -12noon, or by appointment. 3. PWA OFFICE VOLUNTEER - PWA is looking for individuals to volunteer in the office to answer phones, open the door and other delegated duties. Persons can volunteer for half-day or the entire day from 8:15am - 3:30pm. This will be greatly appreciated so teachers are not interrupted during the day when classes are in session. 4. AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES - Your help needed! PWA needs individuals to dedicate their time 1-2 days/week from 3:45pm - 4:30pm who can provide Praise Dance instruction for the girls and organize a basketball team an teach the rudiments of the game for the boys. If you, or someone you know, can provide this extracurricular instruction for the girls or the boys, please call the school at 313-565-5808 and leave a message for Principal Jefferson. The time is a small sacrifice with positive gains for our PWA students!

Weekly Updates: May 29, 2024
1. PARTNERING FOR ETERNITY - An appreciation event for those who participated in the Partnering for Eternity Scholarship Program was held on Wednesday, May 22nd at 1:30pm at the school. Recognition with gifts and certificates was given to students, mentors, and parents who participated in the program. Three students earned over $750 and the highest earned $870 in free tuition. Partnering for Eternity Scholarship is a creative and generous program that promotes community service, and intergenerational relationships while earning free tuition.
2. PWA DRAMA CLUB - Several students are involved in the after-school drama club. The play originally scheduled for Tuesday, May 28th was postponed. A rescheduled date/time will be communicated when available.
3. PWA GRADUATION - Peterson-Warren Academy graduation exercises will take place this coming Sabbath, June 1st at the Sharon SDA Church 28537 Cherry Street in Inkster, MI. Elder Daphne Springer, an educator and member of the Sharon SDA church will be speaker for Baccalaureate at 11:00am. Pastor Neville Lendor of the City Temple SDA church will present the Commencement address at 6:30pm. Please plan to attend to support the graduates as they celebrate this important milestone in their educational pursuits.
While the school year has ended, a number of initiatives are in development to increase enrollment. We will keep you informed as plans unfold. 2. PARTNERING FOR ETERNITY - An appreciation event for those who participated in the Partnering for Eternity Scholarship Program will be held today, Wednesday, May 22tn at 1:30pm at the school. Students, mentors, and parents will be recognized and receive gifts and certificates. Several students earned over $500 toward their school bill. 3. HANDS-ON MUSEUM FIELD TRIP - a field trip is planned for this Friday, May 24. PWA staff and students will visit the Hands-On Museum in Ann Arbor, MI. The experience promises to be fun and educational as the Mission of the Hands-On Museum is to create moments of discovery that inspire curiosity, exploration and respect for STEM and the natural world. STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. What a wonderful way to end the school year!
4. PWA DRAMA CLUB - The students involved in the after-school drama club will be presenting a play on Tuesday, May 28th at 6:30pm at the school. All are invited to attend.
5. LAST DAY OF SCHOOL - PWA will end the school year on Wednesday, May 29th with a field trip to Greenfield Village in Dearborn, MI, where staff and students will view STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) through the eyes of past innovators and hands-on activities.

Weekly Updates: May 15, 2024
1. MICHIGAN COMMUNITY CENTER GRANT UPDATE - Peterson-Warren Academy, Flint Fairhaven SDA School and Pontiac Southside SDA church were awarded a $283,000 grant in December 2023! Evenly divided between the three recipients, the purpose of the grant is to support before and after school, and summer programs. PWA started their after-school program in March with four different classes: tutoring, STEAM, drama club and recreation. STEAM, an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math, and the tutoring class, take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The drama club and recreation are on Mondays and Wednesdays. Facilitators from area churches lead out in these activities which take place from 330 - 6pm. The students involved in the drama club will be presenting a play, soon to be announced.
2. LRC EDUCATION EMPHASIS - Sabbath services with a focus on Adventist education took place in various churches across the Lake Region Conference on Sabbath, April 27th. PWA staff and students contributed to the worship service of the Ecorse SDA church presenting the welcome, a principal's progress report, scripture and a musical selection.
3. LRC EDUCATION FIELD DAY - The Lake Region Conference Education Department will sponsor an Education Field Day on Tuesday, May 21st to be held at Camp Wagner in Cassopolis, MI. Staff and students from schools across the conference will participate in a variety of track and field events. Principal Jefferson is requesting assistance to provide snacks and water for the students during the excursion, as well as defray the cost of T-shirts to be purchased to identify students from each school. You can help PWA meet this $200 expense! Please send your donation via $cashapp to $CityTempleDetroit by this Friday, May 17th, at 12noon. In the comment, please indicate LRC field day. Your contribution would be greatly appreciated! Special thanks to City Temple SDA church for the use of their bus and Brother Gibson for driving.
4. MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) STANDARDIZED TESTING - Students are currently participating in the third and final MAP testing to be completed this week. The students have met with their teachers and goals have been set. This final session will provide an assessment of the students' progress towards those goals.
5. PWA ANNUAL SCIENCE FAIR - This Sunday, May 19th, PWA will host their annual Science Fair at the school. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend. The Science Fair will take place from 12noon - 3pm at the school - Peterson Warren Academy 4000 Sylvia Street Inkster, MI 48141. Please come out and support our school!

1. PARTNERING FOR ETERNITY SCHOLARSHIP UPDATE - Several students are earning up to $120 per month in free tuition through this generous scholarship and community service program available to all PWA students on a first-come, first served basis. This semester six students participated. With Peterson's current enrollment of 33 students, we are able to enroll 15 students into the K-8 program and 26 students into the high school program. So there is plenty of room for more students to enroll. High School students can earn $800 for the semester. Elementary students can earn up to $120/month. Spread the word and encourage students to take advantage of this tuition assistance program for next semester. 2. DONATION OF PIANO: yesterday, Tuesday December 19, PWA received a baby grand electric piano from an anonymous donor. What a blessing this will provide for students to enhance music education. Thank you to those who made this remarkable donation possible.
3. MICHIGAN COMMUNITY CENTER GRANT - Principal Jefferson enthusiastically reports that Peterson-Warren Academy, Flint Fairhaven SDA School and Pontiac Southside SDA church, have been awarded a $283,000 grant! 4. HOLIDAY GRANT - an anonymous donor graciously provided $1200 for two PWA families selected at PWA. One family will receive $700 and the other family will receive $500. These funds were specifically donated to meet a pressing need so these families will be able to have an enjoyable Christmas. This is a heart-warming blessing that these two families will long remember. Thank you to the donor who reminds us that there are people in the world who care about the needs of others during the Christmas holiday.

1. HOLIDAY CRAFTS - Last Wednesday, December 6th and this past Monday, December 11th, students in grades 3 - 8 participated in a craft activity making Christmas wreaths or holiday table centerpieces. This creative experience was one they truly enjoyed and will have a token to take home or share to celebrate the holidays. Appreciation is due to Angela Moore of the Ypsilanti SDA church for her donation of time and materials and supervision of this special activity.
2. CHRISTMAS VACATION - PWA will be closed for two weeks for the Christmas and New Year's holiday. The last day will be Friday, December 22nd. Classes will resume on Monday, January 8, 2024.

1. HOLIDAY CLOTHING GIVE-AWAY - PWA staff and students will begin collecting hats, gloves, scarves and socks to give away for the holiday. PWA is once again exploring a partnership with E.J. King of the City Temple SDA church and basketball team, MyBoysHoop to distribute these items to community residents. Stay tuned for more information on how you can help and be a part of the TEAM - Together Everyone Accomplishes More!
2. MICHIGAN COMMUNITY CENTER GRANT - The Lake Region Conference has applied for a Michigan Community Center Grant for up to $2.5 million. If awarded, the grant will provide capital funding for facility renovations and upgrades for Peterson-Warren Academy and Flint Adventist school. Notification is expected in December. Please pray that PWA and Flint will be recipients of this much needed grant funding.
3. HOME AND SCHOOL LEADER NEEDED - Principal Jefferson is still inviting someone or a team of volunteers to assist with fundraising and helping with special school events, like Grandparents Day and Teacher Appreciation Day and to coordinate with local church Home & School leaders. 4. CNA - CERTIFIED NURSE ASSISTANT PROGAM - PWA will be the site for a CNA program that will give the opportunity for H.S. students and others to acquire employable skills in the health field. This is an innovative program that will put PWA on the map and attract students to attend our school.
5. CHILD CARE PRESCHOOL PROGRAM - Plans are being made to establish a care care preschool program on-site at Peterson Warren Academy. Principal Jefferson reports she has received many calls in the past from parents looking for this resource. This will be another great marketing tool for PWA as well as a program to meet the needs of the Inkster community. Thank you to Dr. Tim Gardner for overseeing some of the preparatory steps for the implementation of this program.

Weekly Update: Nov 15, 2023
1. FOOD PANTRY - The PWA food pantry renovation is now complete with freshly painted walls, & shelving, newly installed vinyl floor tiles, and a new bright LED ceiling light. The shelves are ready to be stocked with non-perishable food items such as low-sodium canned vegetables, whole grain cereals, oatmeal, grits, cream of wheat, whole grain unbleached flour, corn meal, brown rice, bottled water, juices, juice boxes and condiments. Please call Principal Jefferson at the school office Mon-Fri, 9:00am to 3:00pm to arrange a food item or monetary donation, or you can send a check payable to Peterson-Warren Academy 4000 Sylvia St., Inkster, MI 48141 or via $CashApp to $CityTempleDetroit, with PWA Pantry on the memo line.
2. DONATION OF LAPTOPS - sincere appreciation is due to the grandmother of one of the PWA students for a donation of 10 laptops to Peterson-Warren Academy. This dedicated grandmother, who is not a Seventh-day Adventist, always has PWA in mind. Since her granddaughter enrolled about 2 years ago, she has donated backpacks with supplies and other items to benefit PWA students. She recently donated $100 to the MyBoysHoop Thanksgiving basket program. Thank you to this grandmother who is a living example that it is more blessed to give than receive!
3. THANKSGIVING FOOD BASKETS - It's not too late to support PWA's collaboration with the MyBoysHoop Thanksgiving food baskets program. Thanks to E.J. King, a PWA alumnus, this basketball team is giving back to the community by providing Thanksgiving food baskets on this Saturday, November 18th, distributing them at the Detroit bus station to those in need. 4. THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY - PWA will break for the Thanksgiving holiday so staff and students can fellowship with friends and family. The last day of school before Thanksgiving will be Tuesday, November 21st.

2. FOOD BASKETS - Principal Jefferson has spoken with Brother E.J. King of the City Temple SDA church about partnering with his basketball team to provide food baskets to families in the Detroit community. PWA staff and students will contribute food items for the food baskets to be distributed on November 18th. Isn't it wonderful that the basketball team is doing something to positively impact their community? and it's especially wonderful the PWA is joining the effort. This activity will teach the students 3 things: 1) It's better to give than receive, 2) we can share with others from the blessings God has given us and 3) the value of collaboration captured in the acronym TEAM - Together Everyone Accomplishes More.
2. NEW STUDENTS - PWA has two new students starting today, November 1st! A 2nd grade boy whose family saw a flyer promoting Peterson Warren Academy and an 8th grade girl from another family. Praise God for sending students to PWA! There are now 33 students of which 3 are high schoolers.
Weekly Update: Oct 25, 2023
1. DONATION - Principal Jefferson reports another donation has been received towards the headphones needed for the students. That makes $135 earmarked for headphones and PWA is ever so grateful for the thoughtfulness of donors to provide funds for this project. Only $10 is needed to purchase all the headphones needed by the students. Will your donation complete this project? 2. PWA FOOD PANTRY - Dr. Tim Gardner and his team are busy preparing the kitchen pantry to store donated food items. A fresh coat of paint and retiling is giving the food pantry a bright new facelift. The Building Healthy Communities - Step Up for School Wellness Initiative has awarded PWA a grant of $500 to purchase food items as well as a refrigeration unit to store perishables. You can be a part of this exciting new venture! Principal Jefferson is requesting donations of can goods (like beans, corn, green peas, green beans, beets, tomatoes), boxed foods (like mashed potatoes, macaroni, rice-a-roni, grits, oatmeal, whole grain breakfast cereals), and packs of dry beans, brown rice, flour, etc., to help stock the PWA pantry. Cash donations for the food pantry items can also be sent to PWA 4000 Sylvia St., Inkster, MI 48141 via check or by $CashAPP to $CityTempleDetroit with PWA food pantry on the comment line. The refrigeration unit and check for $500 is due to arrive in December. PWA leadership is in the process of developing a food distribution program that will be of great benefit to its recipients.

1. PWA ALUMNI WEEKEND - This was indeed a remarkable event! The music, remarks and especially the message by Pastor William Lee was pure inspiration and encouragement. If you were not able to attend, there are lots of pictures on the PWA Alumni FB page and there will be updates on the official PWA FB page soon. A more detailed report will be available on the PWA website - petersonwarren.net. Much appreciation is due to the hard work and vision of Alice Dent, president of the PWA Alumni Association and her team for a job very well done.
2. CNA - CERTIFIED NURSE ASSISTANT PROGAM - PWA will be the site for a CNA program that will give the opportunity for H.S. students and others to acquire employable skills in the health field. This is an innovative program that will put PWA on the map and attract students to attend our school.
3. DAY CARE PROGRAM - Plans are being made to establish a day care program on-site at Peterson Warren Academy. Principal Jefferson reports she has received many calls in the past from parents looking for this resource. This will be another great marketing tool for PWA as well as a program to meet the needs of the Inkster community.
4. TOUCHLESS WATER FOUNTAINS - thanks to the very generous donation of a PWA alumnus, 2 touchless water fountains have been installed in the PWA main hallway, one on the Elementary side and the other on the High School side. The staff and students are deeply grateful for this donation which will allow students to fill their water bottles and keep hydrated throughout the school day.

1. NEW ADDITION - A new exterior front door runner was donated by an alumnus. What a wonderful gift to improve the aesthetics and welcoming atmosphere to all who come to PWA!
2. PWA LAWN SIGNS - More lawn signs advertising PWA as a Christian Academy, are being placed on strategic corners in the Inkster community. This has been a real blessing in promoting Peterson-Warren Academy and responsible for leading new students to enroll at the school this year.
3. APPRECIATION FOR DONATIONS - Principal Jefferson reports receiving a $60 donation that will go toward the purchase of 10 head phones needed for the students. This is greatly appreciated especially for the younger students to augment their learning as they acquire reading skills. Another donation of $100 was given toward the stocking of the food pantry, which will be a tremendous blessing to students and community as the food pantry program is implemented. Thank you to members of the MCPL for your thoughtful and generous financial contributions for the benefit of Peterson-Warren Academy.
4. TECHNOLOGY UPGRADES - the new wiring to improve the technology capabilities will be completed this week! It has been a very detailed and long process. Improved internet access will be a blessing to students for their online Spanish course, the high school students for their Griggs grades 9-12 classes operated by Andrews University, and of course, the staff for their administrative work.
5. PWA ALUMNI WEEKEND - This special event begins this Sabbath, with Sabbath School at 930am and continues the weekend theme "Waging War" with Dr. William Lee, Sr. pastor of First SDA church in Huntsville, Alabama, as the worship service speaker. Other notable PWA alumni contributors to the worship service include music from Living Waters, presentations by Dr Kim Logan-Nowlin, Toson Antwan Knight and Darnell Logan and a special praise dance presentation by the current PWA 5th - 9th grade students! This high Sabbath will culminate with the 4pm afternoon service featuring the London SDA church Pathfinder Induction and special charge by LRC Youth Director Pastor Earl Baldwin. The day promises many blessings in fellowship and positive highlights about the history and future of Peterson Warren Academy. Please plan to attend to support PWA with your presence.
